History
Christ Church Hackenthorpe was built in 1899 as a Chapel of
Ease for St Mary’s Beighton, then in the Diocese of Derby.
It’s position, away from the heart of the village, was due to the
fact that the main financier was
Mr Hounsfield who owned Cotleigh Hall and wanted the Church near to his
hall for easy access!
During the 1960’s an extension was built for use as a Church Hall.
For a time the Church became part of the joint Parish of Frecheville
and Hackenthorpe and in 1989, when it was realised that the Church had
never been consecrated in its own right, this was done by the then
Bishop of Sheffield David Lunn.
In the 1980’s plans began to be made for the extension of the
Church. The old extension was demolished and part of the land
sold to the Parsonage Committee of the Diocese for the building of a
new Vicarage.
In 1999 the redevelopment of the present building began, a mobile
building was temporarily put in place for use as a Church hall.
On Easter Sunday 2000 the present building was opened to the glory of
God.
